Culinary History of the Finger Lakes: From the Three Sisters to Riesling

April 10, 2015, 7:30 pm - 8:45 pm

Geneva History Museum
543 South Main Street
Geneva, NY 14456

In this lecture, Laura Winter Falk will examine the history and evolution of food in the Finger Lakes. Based on her book of the same name, Falk will explore food traditions of the Finger Lakes, weaving a story of the relationship between the people and the region in which they grow, eat and enjoy food. Beginning with the Iroquois cultivation of the Three Sisters—corn, beans and squash—she will trace this relationship up to the development of modern wine varietals and the locavore movement. Copies of Culinary History of the Finger Lakes: From the Three Sisters to Riesling will be available for purchase and signing following the event.

Laura Winter Falk is co-owner and president of Experience! The Finger Lakes, a touring and events company in Ithaca that specializes in immersive food and wine experiences in the Finger Lakes region. She holds a PhD in nutrition and is a member of the Guild of Sommeliers. She regularly guest lectures at Cornell University, Ithaca College and Finger Lakes Community College. Laura serves on the board of directors of the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance and Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce and is also an appointed member of the Tompkins County Agriculture and Culinary Task Force.

This lecture is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities.
