Edna Gelder 1954

December 23rd, 2014

Mrs. Gelder lived on Routes 5 & 20 west of Geneva, near the Seneca Castle Road. She was a well-known baker and was famous for her Christmas fruitcakes. (If you’ve only had the storebought, dry cakes with waxy fruit, you need to try a homemade fruitcake.) For many years, she sent one to the White House, and shipped them to New York City for sale.

Mrs Gelder was a great baker! We lived for a time not far from her on the Post Farm. My uncle volunteered with other men from the Methodist Church to deliver her baked goods on Saturday as she had lost most of her eye sight and couldn’t drive. Old school nice lady who is a very fond memory.

What a wonderful thing to find a reference to Edna Gelder on the internet! Her doughnuts remain to this day my standard of excellence. I’d pretty much kill to wrap my lips around one of her cinnamon sugar ones :-). As kids we felt so lucky if our parents stopped at her bakery when we drove from our home in Ithaca up to see our grandparents in Rochester. Nice memories :-)
