Classes for New Voters To Be Held This Week
The special classes provided by the Board of Education for new voters who wish help in preparing for the state literacy test will be held in Prospect avenue school on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evening of this week beginning at 7:30. These classes are open to all new voters, whether American or foreign-born, who wish to offer a certificate of literacy to the registration board in place of any other examination. All new voters, including those who have recently become of age, those who have moved into the state since the last election, and those recently naturalized, are subject to the new literacy amendment to the state election law which requires either (a) evidence of completion of the 5th grade (b) an examination by the Board of Regratration to show the candidate’s ability to read and write in the English language, or (c) a certificate of literacy issued by public school authorities. The classes at Prospect avenue will give new voters an opportunity to earn this certificate of Literacy.
