Apples: Their History, Stories and Uses
March 25, 2015, 7:30 pm - 8:45 pm
This is the first lecture in our Spring Lecture Series, which focuses on food in the Finger Lakes. Mary Jean Welser's program on Wednesday, March 25 looks at the history of apples. Apples are embedded in our history, from the Roman Empire to the time when the first apple trees were brought to the new world and up to today when we remember our favorite varieties. Learn about the history and uses of apples and share stories of your own memories and experiences with apples.
Mary Jean Welser works at the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station in the Deptartment of Horticulture. Apples have been a part of her life for as long as she can remember, beginning with the apple orchard of unknown varieties at her first home. Her interest in apples, history and preservation of the past has led her to learn about heirloom apple varieties, their stories and the stories people remember about their favorite apples.
This program is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities.
