Geneva Political Equality Club Day

In honor of the Geneva Political Equality Club's (GPEC) 120th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in New York State, the City of Geneva has declared November 30, 2017 Geneva Political Equality Club Day. The Geneva Historical Society will host a program at 7 p.m. at the museum in connection with the anniversary.
Formed on November 30, 1897 by a group including the mother-daughter team of Elizabeth and Anne Miller, the Geneva Political Equality Club became a forum for discussing current events and educating the public about issues related to women's rights. The Millers used their connections to bring nationally and internationally known suffragists to Geneva, including Susan B. Anthony, Carrie Chapman Catt and Emmeline Pankhurst. Under Anne's leadership the GPEC became the largest club in the state. She and other members also helped to form Political Equality Clubs throughout Ontario County. Following the success of their suffrage campaign in 1917, the Geneva Club spawned both the Geneva Women's Club and the local chapter of the League of Women Voters.
Join the Geneva Historical Society's Executive Director Kerry Lippincott as she examines the lives of Elizabeth and Anne Miller, and Geneva’s role in the suffrage movement. Copies of the Geneva Historical Society publication, The Prouty Chew Chronicles: Elizabeth Smith Miller and Anne Fitzhugh Miller, will be available for purchase at the program.
