Homeschooling families! Join us to learn more about landscape painter Robert S. Duncanson and the process of creating art from the view outside. Robert S. Duncanson (1821 – December 21, 1872) was a 19th-century American landscape artist of European and African ancestry. Born in Fayette, NY, he became the most important landscape artist of the West in the 19th century. Inspired by famous American landscape artists like Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, Duncanson created renowned paintings of the American and European countryside. He was the first African-American artist to be internationally known.

Come to the grounds at Rose Hill Mansion to look deeply at copies of the works of Robert S. Duncanson. Learn what a landscape painting is, and how artists use them to tell a story, convey a feeling, describe a particular place, or explore light and color. Explore the process artists like Duncanson and Cole used to create their works, then try your hand at creating a landscape painting of the views around Rose Hill.

This program is aligned with the New York State standards in Visual Arts. It is designed primarily for children in grades K through 6. Families with children of all ages are welcome to attend, as there will be coloring and painting activities geared towards younger learners as well.

Seneca County is having a yearlong celebration (June 1, 2021-May 31, 2022) of Duncanson in honor of his birth. Partner organizations, including Historic Geneva, are producing programs and digital materials on the artist throughout the year.

This program will be conducted out of doors. If the program is canceled due to wet conditions, it will be rescheduled for June 1 at the same time. The program costs $5 per child for age 5 and up. Adults and younger siblings are free. Advance registration is required and space is limited. To reserve a space call Historic Geneva at 315-789-5151 or email educator@historicgeneva.org.
