Although hundreds of miles from the nearest Civil War action, Seneca County contributed more than its share for the preservation of the Union. The stories of its people reflect those of many upstate citizens during the war. Seneca County Historian Walt Gable will share the accounts of the many brave men who left home to fight, including that of solider John Hoster, who was imprisoned at the infamous Andersonville prison camp. At home, the county's farmers fed Lincoln’s hungry army, and its industries provided materiel for the war effort. After the war, Waterloo’s celebration in remembrance of fallen soldiers was replicated around the country, and the village is recognized as the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Walt Gable has been Seneca County Historian for over 10 years. He graduated from the Romulus Central School and received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Syracuse University. He wrote Seneca County and the Civil War as part of his work as county historian. All royalties from sales go to the Caywood Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans, the Mary Gahan Tent of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the National Memorial Day Museum, each of which helps to preserve Civil War legacy in Seneca County.

This lecture is supported in part by the Samuel B. Williams fund for programs in the Humanities. For more information about this program, call the Geneva Historical Society office at 315-789-5151.
