Online Lessons: Landscape Artist Robert S. Duncanson

Robert S. Duncanson was a landscape painter born in Fayette, Seneca County, near Geneva in 1821. He grew up in the Midwest and became the first internationally famous African-American artist and the premier landscape artist of the American west. In recognition of the 200th anniversary of Duncanson’s birth we have created a lesson plan for three grade levels focused on his work as a landscape painter.
A number of institutions have online collections of Duncanson’s works that you can use for discussion.
- There is an online exhibition from the Cincinnati Museum of Art also accessible through Google’s Arts and Culture Museum Explorer. The site includes biographical information, as well as historical context for the featured paintings.
