The third program in Historic Geneva's spring 2022 History Sandwiched In series will take place on March 16 at 12:30 p.m. Mel Oles, Historic Geneva's Visitor Services & Programs Manager at Rose Hill & Johnston House, will explore the life and work of Robert S. Duncanson. Born in Fayette, NY, Duncanson (1821 – December 21, 1872) became the most important landscape artist of the West in the 19th century. Robert S. Duncanson was a 19th-century American landscapist of European and African ancestry. Inspired by famous American landscape artists like Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, Duncanson created renowned landscape paintings and is considered a second-generation Hudson River School artist. Duncanson is considered the first African-American artist to be internationally known. Seneca County is having a yearlong celebration of Duncanson (June 1, 2021-May 31, 2022) with programs, blogs and partnerships with multiple organizations, including Historic Geneva. Join us online to learn a bit more about this under-appreciated American artist.

The program will be presented online through Zoom, and advance registration is required. To register, participants should click here. The necessary login information will be sent to registrants via email 24 hours prior to the program. For any problems with registration or to register by phone, call the Historic Geneva office at 315-789-5151. Registrations must be complete before 5:00 p.m. on March 15, the day before the program.

Charles Bean was an enigmatic figure in Geneva’s history. His tendency to spread false histories about Geneva and his family’s land have had an outsized impact on people's perceptions of Geneva's past. Many of his stories are still perpetuated to this day. Parsing out the fact from fiction are our long-gone Geneva historians whose hard work uncovered the truth. We’ll look at the misnamed Lafayette Tree, a mysterious school, and historic markers that relay false information in the program.

The program will be presented online through Zoom, and advance registration is required. To register, click here. Presenter Jim Farfaglia will look at historic snowstorms in the counties of Cayuga, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Oswego, Seneca, Tompkins and Wayne. Central New York, a region renowned as one of the snowiest in the world, has a long and stormy relationship with its winters. His presentation will include a PowerPoint program of photos, video and graphics from the past storms as well as a selection of survival stories from the book.

Jim Farfaglia lives in and writes about the history and traditions of Central New York. In 2011, after a fulfilling career directing a children’s camp and advocating for youth, Jim transitioned to his lifelong interest in writing. Splitting his time between poetry and what he calls “story-driven nonfiction,” Jim's books include Nestlé in Fulton, New York: How Sweet It Was, Pioneers: The Story of Oswego County’s Search and Rescue Team, Voices in the Storm: Stories From The Blizzard of ‘66 and Of the Earth: Stories From Oswego County’s Muck Farms. He is a recipient of a 2022 CNY Arts, Inc. Individual Artist Commission, which allows Jim to share his inspirational poems throughout Central New York and beyond.
