One City, Many Stories: Geneva’s Diversity

    March 1, 2023

A large group of black and white men in suits and overalls stand in the middle of a road among piles of rock, shovels, wheel barrows, and several surveyors' tools.

African Americans and immigrants came to Geneva to build the streets and many stayed.

Historic Geneva curator John Marks will speak about the many diverse peoples who have made up Geneva's population over its history. From the native Haudenosaunee population and those who came from New England, the South, and downstate to the waves of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Italy, Syria, Mexico, and elsewhere, John will look at what drew various groups of people to the area and how they helped build the city of Geneva today.

This program is part of the City of Geneva's 125th anniversary celebration and is free and open to the public. For more about the celebrations, visit the City of Geneva website calendar.

A Community Conversation on Race and Housing

    November 9, 2023

A map of Rochester, NY with areas outlined and colored red, yellow, blue and green.

A 1938 New Deal Home Owners' Loan Corporation map of Rochester marks the least desirable areas for funding in red.

Join us for the final program in our fall program series. We are hosting a conversation about housing segregation and racial discrimination in Rochester and the Finger Lakes at the Hobart and William Smith Intercultural Center. The program includes a screening of the short film Home: Access Denied about the history and legacy of residential segregation in Greater Rochester and the ways ordinary people are participating in civic action to create a more welcoming, just, and inclusive community. The film explores the stories of two families and their lived experiences as shaped by the neighborhoods they call home. The conversation will be facilitated by Greg Ahlquist, a teacher with the Webster School District and facilitator with the Antiracist Curriculum Project. In addition to the screening, community members and staff from Historic Geneva will share information about the history of housing discrimination in Geneva, including material from the current exhibit, Lift Every Voice: Geneva's Black Community Since 1966.

Home Access: Denied is a production of the Antiracist Curriculum Project, directed by Carvin Eison, filmed by Martin Hawk, written by Justin Murphy, produced by Brennon Thompson and Casey Asporooth-Jackson, and edited by Nicolina Scibona and Martin Hawk.

The Antiracist Curriculum Project is committed to empowering students, educators, and communities with instructional resources about their local history of racism and civil rights. They support students, educators, and community members in the co-creation, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum that allows learners to explore and interpret their local history through rich primary sources. Ultimately, the project works to cultivate more informed and engaged community members to build a more just and equitable society.
