Preserving History Amidst the Winter’s Chill

As the winds continue to blow and the landscape transforms into a serene, snow-drift wonderland, Rose Hill Mansion stands resilient against the cold. Throughout the winter months the historic site requires dedicated maintenance. Below are highlights of some winter maintenance projects that not only preserve the mansion’s integrity but also enhance its charm during this windy season.

One of the most critical components of any building is its roof. The winter weather can be harsh, with snow accumulation and ice dams posing risks to both the structure and the interior. During the winter, staff conduct walkthrough inspections almost daily. Leaks were found in the attic during a recent walkthrough. This led to checking for loose shingles, the chimneys, and other potential areas of concern. Since it was difficult to make repairs due to the extremely cold weather, a temporary fix was made till the spring.

The last thing anyone wants is pipes bursting during a cold snap! Our winter maintenance routine includes draining outdoor faucets, turning off water in buildings, and ensuring that the heating system is functioning effectively. By taking these precautions, we can protect against water damage. A small leak was found in the basement. The cause was an exposed pipe. It was quickly fixed and insulated.

It is difficult to do regular painting projects in the warmer months when the historic site is open to the public. During the off season, we select certain rooms to be painted. This year the primarily focus was the second-floor bedrooms. Our Archivist Becky Chapin and Curator John Marks helped prepare the spaces by removing artifacts.

While the historic grounds might be dormant and under snow, winter maintenance doesn’t stop at the buildings. We focused on caring for the trees and shrubs surrounding Rose Hill. This includes pruning dead branches, applying mulch to protect roots from freezing temperatures, and ensuring all the walkways are clear of snow and ice for safety.

Lastly, winter offers a unique opportunity to plan for the upcoming season. From the landscape plan to the new specialty tour, summer concerts, and Family Day and other programs, the staff will brainstorm creative ways to engage the community. By preparing in advance, we can ensure that Rose Hill Mansion continues to be a vibrant hub of activity and history.

Winter maintenance at Rose Hill Mansion is not just about preserving the physical structure but also about maintaining the spirit and history of this cherished landmark. Through careful planning and dedicated work, we aim to ensure that Rose Hill remains a beloved destination. As the snow blankets our grounds, we invite you to stay tuned for what’s in store for the upcoming seasons!
