    Cover of the book The Doctors Blackwell and headshot of author Janice Nimura.In recognition of the 175th anniversary of Elizabeth Blackwell's graduation from the Geneva Medical College in 1849, the Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes will host an online program with Janice Nimura, author of the book The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine. The book was a Finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Biography and is an excellent account of the two sisters' pioneering efforts in medicine.

    The program will be presented on Zoom only. Registration is required. To register, click here. The necessary login information will be sent to registrants via email 24 hours prior to the program. For any problems with registration or to register by phone, call the Historic Geneva office at 315-789-5151. Registrations must be complete before 5 pm on January 17, the day before the program.The meeting is presented in cooperation with Historic Geneva and is free and open to the public.     Antique candlebras, flatware and coffee grinders on a table.The Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes will present a virtual Roundtable of Antiques and Collectibles on February 3 at 2 p.m. at the Geneva History Museum. The meeting is free and open to club members and the general public.

    Attendees are invited to bring antique or vintage items they would like to learn more about or simply discuss. Antiques dealers Christina Champion, Peter Jablonski, and Michael Haskins will examine and comment on items brought to the meeting. Audience members will also be invited to comment. Suggested items include paintings, prints, bottles, china, glassware, oriental rugs, decorative accessories, art work, primitives, textiles and small furniture.

    The Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes is in its 49th year of programming. Meetings are free and open to the public, but membership is welcome and encouraged at $10 per year. Programs include meetings at the Geneva History Museum, field trips and social events.

    About the panelists:

    Christina Champion is the owner of  Christina's Antiques, in Red Creek, NY, in business since 1979.  Christina has participated in numerous antiques shows in the Northeast and South. She specializes in 18th, 19th and early 20th-century furniture, art & accessories, folk art, advertising, stoneware, textiles, vintage clothing, sterling, decoys, bottles, fine china and glass. Christina is a Certified Antiques Appraiser with the Asheford Institute of Antiques (A.I.A.).

    Peter Jablonski of Peter J's Antiques and Collectibles, Buffalo, has been buying, selling and appraising antiques and collectibles for over 20 years as well as selling nationally and internationally on eBay. He has also appeared on cable television presenting live appraisals. Peter serves as president of the Greater Buffalo Bottle Collectors Association. He was the Antiques Club speaker last October on the intriguing subject, “Time Capsule in Your Backyard.”

    Michael Haskins got a start in his antiques career many years ago by setting up a flea market in Newark. Through that venue he met his friends and long time mentors, Carol and Bill Scheetz. Michael currently has an in-house shop in Palmyra and does antique shows in several states. He deals in Americana, accessories, furniture, oriental rugs, art work and curiosities. Most of his customers are dealers, in and out of state, but he welcomes all collectors.

    Our History Happy Hours are back for 2024. Join Historic Geneva Curator John Marks for a short and informal program at Lake Drum Brewing. This month, he will share a captioned slide show highlighting images and information about Geneva's music history.

    From venues to famous musicians (both forgotten and remembered) and national recording acts to local people, Geneva has a wealth of music history. Explore it in this informal program. Come in any time, stay as long as you like! The slides will run on a continuous loop throughout the time. John will be available to chat and welcomes people with suggestions for a Music in Geneva, Part 2 slide show.

    Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes: Meet Amelia Earhart

    A woman standing in a flight costume.Come and meet aviatrix Amelia Earhart as portrayed by Eleanor Stearns.  The program is presented in person by the Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes at the Geneva History Museum.

    In her presentation, Stearns will describe incidents that led to Earhart’s interest in flying and discuss her flights. Stearns has thoroughly researched Earhart’s life. She visited her birthplace in Atchison, Kansas and was privileged to go through her grandparents’ home where she was born, and to view clothing, letters, and artifacts of Earhart and her family.

    Eleanor Stearns is retired from the Geneva City Schools. She is an active member and past president of the Geneva Theatre Guild and has performed in many plays. Among her favorite roles are Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst, Fonsia Dorsey in The Gin Game, and Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman. In 2005, she received an outstanding performance award at the Theatre Association of New York State Festival for her portrayal of Anastasia in the one-act play Foibles. She was honored by Lake to Lake Women, Inc. in March, 2013 for her Women of Vision portrayals.

    The program is presented in cooperation with Historic Geneva and is free and open to the public.     All are welcome to join a special meeting of the Geneva Public Library's Anti-Racist Book Club at the Geneva History Museum. Before the discussion enjoy a tour of the exhibit, Lift Every Voice: Geneva's Black Community Since 1966, which explores the history of Geneva's black community since the Civil Rights Movement. The discussion will be about Kathryn Grover's Make a Way Somehow, which explores African American life in Geneva from 1790 until 1965. Copies of the book are available for purchase from Historic Geneva or to borrow from the library. The discussion will be facilitated by Historic Geneva Executive Director Kerry Lippincott. She will also give background about how the book and exhibits came to be.

    Astronomer and comet finder William Brooks lived and worked in Geneva from 1887 until his death in 1921.  16 of his 27 documented comets were found from his observatory on Castle Street in Geneva.  Join Historic Geneva Curator John Marks to learn about Brooks’ life and career. The program is free and open to the public.

    Join Historic Geneva for our third jigsaw puzzle competition, Piecing Together the Past. Teams of four people will compete to finish a 1,000-piece, one-of-a-kind Geneva themed jigsaw puzzle in under three hours. The fastest team to assemble their puzzle will win a prize. Each participating team will get to take their puzzle home with them.

    Participants will enjoy good-natured puzzle-solving rivalry while supporting Historic. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited to 12 teams.

    To enter the competition, teams must submit a registration form and pay the $30 registration fee (maximum of four people per team). The fee must be paid in full at the time of registration using the team captain’s name and contact information. Teams must register by Friday, March 8.

    Race, History and Representation Community Conversation

    Race, History and Representation Community Conversation

    Cover of the book Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey.The first program in the Historic Geneva Spring 2024 Program Series will be a Community Conversation on Race, History and Representation developed by Humanities New York. It will be held on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Geneva History Museum and is free and open to the public.

    The Community Conversations developed by Humanities New York are text-based discussions led by a local facilitator. The conversation focuses on a text that tackles an important aspect of American life and encourages community dialogue. The "Race, History and Representation" discussion will explore how memory and culture can influence our understanding of race in American society through a conversation about the poem “Southern History” by former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey. In this piece from her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Native Guard, Trethewey examines the impact of teaching distorted views of history. The Geneva conversation will be facilitated by Geneva High School English teacher Brandi Taylor. No preparation is required for the program. Copies of the poem will be available the night of the event. You will also find it online here.

    Brandi Taylor is a devoted educator at Geneva High School, holding a New York State teacher certification in English Language Arts. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Africana Studies and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. With a strong foundation in community activism and education, Brandi brings a wealth of experience and fervor for empowerment, education, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to the Historic Geneva program.

    The Spring Program Series is presented in conjunction with the current Historic Geneva exhibit, Lift Every Voice: Geneva's Black Community Since 1966, open at the Museum through April 13.

    Antiques Club of the Finger Lakes presents this program by military historian and history buff Michael Ariano. He will bring a personal perspective to his research and amateur archeology in locating enslaved people’s and servants’ quarters on Cayuta Lake, Schuyler County, New York. He will discuss his findings at White Gates, his mother’s childhood home that was built in 1825 by the wealthy Lawrence family from New York City.

    Ariano’s intention is to recognize White Gates’ identity as a slavery location in Schuyler County and acknowledge that slavery was prevalent in all the states, not just the south. Through his research, Ariano learned that White Gates had three small huts used as slave quarters. After the 1827 New York that outlawed slavery, these huts became servant quarters. He believes that eventually White Gates became a station on the Underground Railroad. Researching local archives and maps, Ariano used a metal detector to uncover several objects that could have been used in 19th century slave or servant quarters.

    Michael Ariano is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and earned a MA in Military History at Norwich University. He was commissioned in the US Army in 2003 and was deployed in Afghanistan and Poland among other places.

    Dr. William Brooks (1844-1921) built his first telescope from farm machinery parts a youth.  In 1881 Brooks discovered his first comet while living in Phelps.  William Smith built a house and an observatory for Brooks on Castle Street in 1888.  He was the second most prolific visual finder of comets in the history of astronomy, having documented 27 over the course of his life. Sixteen of these he found from his observatory in Geneva.  In 1900 he viewed and documented a solar eclipse in Geneva. He also taught astronomy at Hobart College for many years until his death.

    January 24, 1925, was the last time Geneva witnessed a total solar eclipse.  Join us for a once in a lifetime experience and view the Great North America Solar Eclipse at Rose Hill Mansion.

    The mansion’s grounds will open at 1 pm. Visitors can walk the grounds and preview the 2024 exhibits in the East Tenant Cottage prior to viewing the eclipse.  Bring your own chairs and blanket.  Totality in Geneva starts at 3:21 pm and will last approximately for 2 minutes and 21 seconds.  After the eclipse the first floor of the mansion will be open for self-guided tours.

    Solar Eclipse Information

    • To watch the solar eclipse, you must wear solar viewing glasses.
    • Among the things you experience during totality are the temperature will drop ten degrees; animals and plants will behave as if it’s night; planets and stars will be visible; and sharpening of shadows.
    • Even if April 8 is a cloudy day, it will still get dark.
    • The solar eclipse will begin at 2:07 pm and end at 4:34 pm.
    • 2144 will be the next time a solar eclipse will be seen in New York State.

    The second program in the Historic Geneva Spring 2024 Program Series will be a panel discussion on issues of food access in Geneva. Participants from the Center of Concern, the Community Lunch program, Food Justice of Geneva, and Blueprint Geneva will discuss the history and role of their organizations' involvement in expanding access to food in Geneva. We will look at the historic connections between segregation, justice, and equity and the availability of healthy, affordable food. The program will be on Monday, April 15 at 6 p.m. at the Adams Intercultural Center at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

    Participants are encouraged to bring a donation of cereal or a canned good with them to the event. Items will be contributed to the Center of Concern food pantry.

    Grab your binoculars and field guides for the first bird walk at Rose Hill! Join Historic Geneva for an exploration through Rose Hill’s landscape while keeping your eyes and ears open for local birds. Learn more about area bird species, habitats, and behaviors with Stephen Kress, founder of National Audubon Society’s Project Puffin and a Visiting Fellow of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

    The spring walk is on April 20 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tickets are $10 per person. Advanced registration is required, and space is limited.

    Stephen Kress is the founder of National Audubon Society’s Project Puffin and a Visiting Fellow of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. He previously served as Vice-President for Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society and Director of the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Bremen, Maine. Innovative seabird restoration methods that he developed in Maine are now standard practice worldwide. He has parallel interests in managing habitats for land birds and has authored several books on attracting birds including the Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds. He is also co-author with Derrick Z. Jackson of Project Puffin: The Improbable Quest to Bring a Beloved Seabird back to Egg Rock and the recently published The Puffin Plan for 12+ readers. Dr. Kress received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Environmental Education and received his Master’s and undergraduate degrees in wildlife management from Ohio State University. He lives in Ithaca, New York with his wife Elissa and daughter Liliana on 40 acres of forest, meadow, and ponds where he tests methods for creating bird-friendly habitats.

    Behind-the-Scenes Tours of Rose Hill Mansion

    Behind-the-Scenes Tours of Rose Hill Mansion

    View through a 6-over-pane window across a pitched roof and field to a lake.Join us for a special behind-the-scenes tour of Rose Hill Mansion. These tours are not the same as our regular tour. They are an opportunity for visitors to see and learn about areas of the house not usually accessible to visitors, including the basement and belvedere (the square tower on the roof).

    Admission for the tour is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for college students with ID, and $6 for children 10-18. The tour is recommended for adults and children 10 years and older. Please be advised that there are many stairs to climb and some confined spaces included in the tour. Because of these limitations, space on the tour is limited, and advance tickets are required. Tickets can be purchased in advance here.

    The final program in the Historic Geneva Spring 2024 Program Series will be held in collaboration with The Dove Block and will feature two historic and three contemporary area artists of color. Historic Geneva staff will briefly speak about the artists Clyde Mathis and Robert S. Duncanson, both African-American men who lived in the Geneva area respectively in the 19th and 20th centuries. Contemporary artists Jeanette Hernandez, Ralph Fryer, and Rosa Vargas will then speak about their work, how they became artists, what inspires them, and why they do what they do.

    Jeanette Hernandez is an art educator and community activist. She graduated from Lyons High School and earned a BA in Art and Education from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and an MA in Art Education from Nazareth College. She taught art at St. Francis-St. Stephen's School in Geneva, at St. Michael’s in Newark, and retired from Marion Central School due to the pandemic in 2022. She was named one of the top five art teachers of New York State in 2013. Jeanette has done community work in Geneva with the Geneva Theater Guild, the Smith Opera House, and Geneva Night Out. She worked part time at the Cobblestone Arts Center in Farmington, teaching art and doing theater art. She is the Community Engagement Coordinator and a Board Member at the Dove Block Project in Geneva. She is pleased to be a part of the Dove Block Project and hopes to bring great art experiences to Geneva.

    Rosa Vargas (Prieta) is an Afro-Caribbean artist based in Rochester NY. Her creations are inspired by her African and Indigenous ancestors. The vibrant colors in her art pieces depict messages of pride for family and community and celebrate her lineage through art. Prieta's artwork has been displayed in The Rochester Contemporary Art Center, The Dove Block Project, The Irondequoit Public Library, and The Henrietta Public Library. She is a visual artist and fashion designer whose creations incorporate both mediums. Her art depicts visions of her multicultural background and makes social commentary on the economic disparities we face today.     Ralph Fryer has been expressing himself with many different forms of art since the age of three. He won a statewide art contest in high school and went on to paint murals while serving in the military. Although he's worked in pencil, charcoal, and paint, he currently does most work in tattoo ink and has worked as a tattoo artist for over thirteen years. This pursuit started when he was a teenager and drew flash (a pre-made design that can usually be tattooed in one sitting) for the tattoo shops in his area, never knowing where it would lead him. Ralph collaborates with his clients to come up with the perfect piece for them, then brings it to life with his own unique style. He has tattooed people across the United States, including in St. Louis, Florida and Puerto Rico and takes great pride in his work. Ralph Fryer is the owner of Octopus Ink on Hamilton Street in Geneva.

    The program will be held on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Dove Block at 465 Exchange Street.

    The Spring Program Series is presented in conjunction with the Historic Geneva exhibit, Lift Every Voice: Geneva's Black Community Since 1966.

    Historic Geneva welcomes Live History to Rose Hill Mansion for an interactive theatrical experience In Time. Due to a mysterious nexus in time, four members of the Swan household have been ripped from the late 1800s to the present day. Each with their own goal, yet all share a common problem. They only have an hour to return to their own time otherwise they risk being erased from history. To get back to their time they need the help of Rose Hill visitors. The question remains will they be, In Time?

    In Time will be held on Saturday, May 18. Groups will leave every 30 minutes beginning at 11:00 am. The last group will leave at 5:00 p.m. This program has escape room, quest, and theatre elements. Visitors will work with their group and actors to explore Rose Hill while trying to solve clues and complete their tasks. The experience takes about an hour.

    The Carriage House Gift Shop will also be open for the event. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students under 18. Tickets can be purchased in advance here or at the door the day of the event.

    Live History, nominated for Canada’s Governor General’s Award, is an international touring company that produces site-specific customizable mysteries around the world. Live History has toured international venues in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Bermuda, England, Wales, and Ireland.

    Once a working farm, the house and surrounding grounds at Rose Hill are open May to October for guided tours. Built in 1839, the elegant Greek Revival house was the center of a busy and productive farm at mid-century, occupied by the Swan family from 1850-1890. Twenty rooms of the house are restored and furnished in the Empire style, popular from the 1820s to 1850s.

    Rose Hill Mansion is located at 3373 Route 96A, about a mile south of Routes 5&20, near Geneva, New York.

For four Sundays the grounds of Rose Hill will be alive with music and fun. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy an evening of music on the lawn to end a summer weekend in the Finger Lakes.

    Bring Dad on Father's Day, Sunday, June 16, for our first concert with A Girl Named Jenny, a high-energy Americana band that uses traditional folk instruments to produce a new sound encompassing several genres, like jazz-roots music, bluegrass-folk, and even rock and roll. Fiddle solos, vocal harmonies, meaningful lyrics, insanely fast drums, and more, are some of the ingredients of that make their shows work.

    The last regular tour of Rose Hill Mansion will run at 3:30 p.m. There will be no house tours during the concerts. The Carriage House Gift Shop will be open during the concerts.

    The concerts are free and open to the public.

The Cool Club and The Lipker Sisters bring their unique style to everything they do, be it the Great American Songbook, an R&B classic or one of their infectious originals, never forgetting…"It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing."
